Appliances
A note about appliance shopping and "spiffs"
Abbaka
www.abbaka.com
A Danish manufacturer of exquisite hoods with a showroom in San Francisco.
I have used their products in a number of projects and two of my showhouse
kitchens appear on their site, the brass barrel hood and the stainless
facets hood on a brick chimney. Don't look if you can't afford them.
They are unforgettably pricey.
Amana
www.amana.com
I have an Amana refrigerator in my own kitchen. I often recommend them for clients.
Asko
www.askousa.com
Asko is the moderately priced quiet European dishwasher
Broan and Best

Broan and Best hoods are the modestly priced hoods I use
constantly. I have a Broan in my own kitchen.
Dacor
www.Dacor.com
California manufacturer of cooking appliances. They have
always been very responsive to the requests of designers like me and
were the first manufacturer of an American under-counter oven. My gas
cooktop is Dacor.

Miele
www.miele.com
Miele makes the very best European appliances. I have a dishwasher and
oven by Miele in my own kitchen.
Sub-Zero
www.subzero.com
Hands-down the best, and priciest, refrigerator on the market. They
recently purchased Wolf ranges so that is there, too.
Thermador
www.thermador.com/home.cfm
Old-line quality appliance manufacturer with excellent products.
Viking
www.vikingrange.com
Manufacturer of commercial-style residential ranges and other cooking
equipment and refrigeration.
A note
about appliances: I have included links to favorite appliance sites
on this web site as a convenience to visitors. Any manufacturers that
are missing are welcome to point out my oversight by email and I will
happily include them if my clients ever use them. Like many designers
I have evolved my favorites over many years as a result of feedback
from my clients.

Here is a link to a great article by Arrol Gellner, an architect who writes columns on architecture and design in the San Francisco Chronicle. This one is about the "design process" and bears reading by anyone planning to hire a designer.

Photographer and stylist I use for most of my professional shoots.
Kitchen Remodel and SNOW in SF by Noel & Barbara Commins
Here is a San Francisco kitchen/nook remodel on his own home, by general contractor Noel Commins; that I helped Noel and wife Barbara redesign. This project was obviously a (happy) family affair.
KITCHEN REMODEL BLENDS ART AND UTILITY
Here is a Foster City kitchen/dining room/family room remodel I designed that is displayed on the Sundquist Associates web site. They did the remodeling project and won an award in the 2001 San Francisco Bay Area NARI Remmies Competition. The "before" shot at the top is really scary, but quite typical.
